The Home Office travel document allows non-UK nationals to travel outside the UK if they are not able to use or obtain a passport from their countries. Home office travel documents can only be applied in certain special circumstances.
Eligibility for Travel Document
To obtain a travel document a person must be living in the UK for one of the following reasons:
- Person has permission to stay as a refugee or stateless person
- Person has humanitarian protection for a limited time after a failed asylum application
- Person has discretionary leave for a limited time after a failed asylum application; or
- Person has indefinite leave to remain.
- It is necessary to know that a person must show that they have formally applied for and been unreasonably refused a passport by authorities in their country. People who have permission to be in the UK as a refugee or stateless person are exempt from this condition.
Types of travel documents
There are four different types of travel documents that a person can apply for, depending on their circumstances and their status in the UK:
- If person is a refugee, they can apply for a convention travel document
- If person is stateless, they can apply for a stateless person’s document
- If person is a non-UK citizen that wants to leave the UK and not come back, they can apply for a one-way document (also known as an IS137)
- If a person has been refused a passport by their own country’s national authorities, they can apply for a certificate of travel.

Who is eligible to apply?

- British National
- Aged 16 or over (or will be in 3 weeks)
- Never had a UK passport before
UK Passport Application
As soon as you have obtained British nationality by birth, naturalisation, or registration, you can apply for your first UK passport. If the applicant is based outside of the United Kingdom, he or she can apply for a first UK passport online. When applying for a first UK passport from outside the UK, it might take up to 6 months for the applicant to receive their first UK passport.
If the applicant is in the United Kingdom, he or she can apply for their first UK passport either online or on paper. Within 7 weeks, a decision on a first UK passport from within the UK is usually made.
UK Passport Renewal
You can apply for a UK passport renewal before or after your current passport expires. You can apply for a renewal of your UK passport from outside the UK if you live there. If you live in the UK, you may renew your UK passport from within the country. If you apply online, you can follow your passport application straightaway, and if you apply by mail, you can track it after six weeks.
UK Passport After Naturalisation
After becoming a British citizen, you can apply for your first adult UK passport. After naturalisation as a British citizen, Her Majesty’s Passport Office typically takes up to 7 weeks to process the application for the first adult UK passport.
How To Apply For UK Passport?
- You may apply for a passport renewal, replacement, or update online.
- You may also utilise the Post Office Check and Send service or pick up passport application forms from your local Post Office and apply by mail.
- Applying for a passport online is less expensive than applying via mail.
Renewing or replacing a passport online might take up to 6 weeks. A first adult passport may take a little longer. You might be able to acquire a passport quickly if you need to travel for humanitarian reasons or for a job, or if you need to establish your identification.
